It's been over a week since I last wrote and I'll update you all about that time later, but I want to share our Friday with you.
So what "didn't take long"? Old behaviors to come back, that's what. Visitation days have typically been Thursday but this week their grandma and grandpa were in town so their mom requested that we move it to Friday afternoon. We complied and they spent a couple hours with their mom, gma/gpa, aunts and uncles. They had a really good time, which we are very thankful for. What we were very unthankful (I know it's not a word!) for was the attitude that came back with both of them.
We've worked very hard to teach them how to behave and interact with each other, us, and other people. (This is going to sound extremely judgmental but if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and looks like a duck...it's probably a duck) In the two hours that their family was around them, their behaviors were destroyed. They came back as whining, complaining, arguing, disobeying, disrespectful kids. They each got sent to timeout a few times in the 1.5 hours between coming home and leaving for the night.
Visitations used to be days where we knew that they may have some attitudes because they either didn't get to see their mom or because of a myriad of other issues that came up during the visit. No other visit was like this one though. Nights like last night and this morning are ones that, if they happened on a regular basis, would make this process (possibly) too much to bare. It's like if your 16 year old woke up one morning and had wet his bed. You'd be asking him "where in the world did that come from?" That's how we're feeling.
Enough said about that...
